Being Human for a Better Tomorrow in the Age of AI
On September 23, 2024, Sam Altman published a blog heralding the arrival of the Intelligence Age (https://ia.samaltman.com/). In this era, our capabilities evolve not through genetic change but by building intelligence as a shared social infrastructure, paving the way for prosperity for all.
While some of his claims, such as deep learning based on data distribution being the path to general intelligence, are contentious, there is merit in his view that navigating this new era requires wisdom and conviction.
This begs the question: How can we act wisely and with conviction to address the challenges ahead?
Fortunately, there is an answer, and it lies in ancient wisdom.
Sun Tzu, the Chinese military strategist and philosopher from the 5th century BCE, is best known for his treatise The Art of War, a comprehensive guide to military strategy and tactics.
Renowned for its clarity of thought, wisdom, and philosophical grounding, his work has been a cornerstone of strategic thought for centuries.
The Art of War emphasizes eight key principles, which can be mapped to three essential attributes: having conviction, thinking clearly, and acting wisely. These attributes align well with how we can address the challenges of the Intelligence Age.
The State of Enterprise Tech 2024 report from Insight Partners identifies data security as the top challenge (28%), followed by compliance (22%) and data quality (17%).
These issues frequently arise during AI deployment, whether in production environments or risk management conversations.
Let’s apply the three attributes—conviction, clear thinking, and wise action—alongside Sun Tzu’s principles to develop a solution model that addresses the challenges of enterprise AI adoption.
Sun Tzu never lost a war, and his approach is still considered seminal.
AI is a new technology, and combining ancient wisdom and thought could show the way for the upcoming Age of Intelligence.
The challenge of AI security can be won one battle at a time in the Age of Intelligence based on ancient wisdom and finding pathways that do both—taking leaps and clearing roadblocks.
This thought experiment is to illustrate a novel solution thinking approach and is limited to data privacy and bias. AI security is complex challenges such as adversarial attacks, backdoor attacks, poisoning attacks, prompt hacking, and privacy attacks including PII leakage, membership inference, gradient leverages etc. This framework and the Art of War principles can help in finding defense strategies.
Best wishes
