Hope you had a wonderful holiday season and here’s to a happy new year to you and all that is dear.
A recent post by a venture capitalist on X (formerly Twitter) about the trends in healthcare after reviewing over 800 startups caught my attention. While the entrepreneurial spirit was commendable, his response was both clear and telling: “People have to prioritize their health,” implying that health is not a priority for society or business.
This is one example. We’re increasingly living in a world where one’s health, well-being, financial security, relationships, joy, and purpose are seen as private matters. Employers, businesses, and institutions have their priorities, often leaving individuals to fend for themselves.
Let me share an intriguing idea that might transform how you think about self awareness and holistic living.
The Panopticon, conceived by philosopher Jeremy Bentham in the 18th century, was an architectural design aimed at achieving order through awareness. Imagine a circular building with a central watchtower, surrounded by cells. A single watchman can potentially observe all inmates, but here’s the genius – inmates, unable to know if they’re being watched, develop an inner compass that guides their behavior. External authority becomes internal wisdom.
Though originally designed for surveillance, the Panopticon offers an unexpected lesson for self-awareness. Imagine transforming its external watchman into an inner compass—your ‘Inner Watchman’—that gently observes every aspect of your life: physical and mental health, financial security, relationships with self and others, engagement at work, and involvement in community and society.
In addition, when we transform this concept for personal growth, the nature of the gaze fundamentally changes. from external for discipline, the self-aware intellect’s ( the ‘Inner Watchman’) inner gaze is based on honesty and optimism. This honest observation aligns with reality and evidence, building authenticity in our actions and interactions. “Are you better off today than a year ago?”, the answer emerges not from detached observation but from optimism and action.
This transformation can be seen in the headline article image. The left side depicts the Panopticon’s structured surveillance, while the right side reimagines it as a lighthouse—illuminating a vibrant landscape of self-awareness and possibilities.
Question:
What resonates with you most in this visual transformation — the watchful structure of the Panopticon, the guiding beam of the lighthouse, or the vibrant landscape of possibilities?
If you don’t already do, journaling is one way to develop your Inner Watchman.
It clarifies thoughts, lightens burdens, and serves as a guide for future reflection.
Conversations with a trusted friend can further refine this self-awareness, helping you align actions with values.
Just as the Panopticon’s watchman needs a systematic way to observe all cells, we too need a structured approach to life’s different dimensions.
Let’s begin with a practical framework.
In the future editions, we’ll explore more but meanwhile, here’s your call to action:
Plan:
What actions can help you answer affirmatively in 2026 to the question,
“Are you better off today than a year ago?”
We live in a complex era. While humanity has never been better off, there’s widespread anxiety about technology, AI, inequality in wealth, access to health and education, conflicts, societal division, distrust, and environmental degradation.
Yet, there’s much to be optimistic about: breakthroughs in biology, physics, materials science, and technologies like AI and blockchain, which offer solutions to these challenges.
We’ve discussed two solutions so far on taxation and welfare and healthcare in the 20th and 26th Mindvista newsletter editions.
His wisdom might sound harsh but paradoxically resonates deeply in an AI age, where self-awareness is not just philosophical but a practical necessity to not be in the mercy of circumstance,
create authentic relationships for a life lived well and without regrets.
It is also an infinite sum game that benefits everyone we interact with, fostering growth as a country and society.
As we seek to answer that crucial question year after year — Are you better off today than before?
Share your thoughts or experiences or what would be useful for applying this “Inner Watchman” concept in your life.
Let’s grow together in 2025 and beyond.
Best wishes
